Handmade Boy: Naples Dress Tour

It's Kate's turn for a tour! Today, she is sharing her Naples Dress, from Jennuine Designs. Art Gallery Fabrics were so kind and provided the fabric for this project.

I had a lot of fun designing this dress to work with Kate's style. She's pretty simple. She prefers clean lines, no ruffles, no prints, nothing poofy, and nothing frilly. She's 11. And around here, unless for a special event, frilly, ruffly, poofy stuff doesn't fly. Okay, poofy never flies, she prefers drapey. However, Jenn made a pattern FULL of options! So many options! It wasn't hard at all to come up with something that Kate loves! And with the help of this amazing Art Gallery Fabric, I knew it would be great!

Kate and I decided on a sleeveless Aline tunic. And to keep the fuss low key, we omitted any and all closures. It slips over her head just fine without them.

We went with Art Gallery's Solid Smooth Denim in Infused Hydrangea. This is a lighter weight denim and perfect for dresses or shirts. I had some scraps of Solid Smooth Denim in Wicked Sky left over from my last Art Gallery project and used that for the bias trim. I LOVE these together!!

I chose to do a bias binding on the arm holes to bring in a bit more of the Wicked Sky. I recently saw a little girl with a dress at an event and it was a solid white sleeveless dress with black binding around the neckline and arm holes only. I loved the simplicity of it and was looking to imitate the style. I am thrilled with the results!

Kate is 5' tall now, and growing. So, I added 3" in length to the tunic for her since the size 12 she measures for is drafted for a girl 57.5" tall. It's comfortable for her and she can move freely in it, but it keeps her well covered so she can wear leggings.

Now, if only spring would actually arrive so that she can wear this cute little tunic without freezing. It was 45 degrees and windy while we shot these, definitely NOT sleeveless tunic weather! Between frames, this was Kate's look, above. But she did great and made beautiful use of the blanket for this shoot.

Of course, we have our fair share of frames that look like this when the wind picked up unexpectedly. LOL But we had fun with it, shot quickly and had her back in the warm vehicle in 10 minutes.
