This bag is a great size for a younger child. Thomas is five and 48" tall and it fit him perfectly.
He can easily carry his own water bottle, a snack and a hoodie on his own during our hikes.
Today though, it carried toys.
The velcro flap and drawstring closure are super simple for him to open and close on his own.
And there is a nice pocket on the inside so small treasures don't get lost in the bottom of the bag. The pattern's suggested fabric is mesh, but fabric works better for our needs. I took advantage of the use of bias tape and used a fun stripe I had on hand.
It's also written to make the bottom of the bag in mesh, with is a GREAT idea! I know I'm not the only person to get those gross little crumbs and dirt all at the bottom of a bag. However, Thomas is HARD on things and loves to also use his bags to tote toy cars and planes to his cousin's house and mesh and little air plane wings aren't very good friends. I used a fabric bottom. I still constructed in the same way as instructed so I got to use that fun stripe bias tape along the bottom lining also.
Oh, I also added a decorative strip of flannel I had left over from another project. Super easy to do! I just cut it to match the length of the main piece and a height I liked, serged both raw edges and then attached with a straight stitch then constructed the bag as instructed. Which btw, nice clear directions and a relatively quick sew, too! The pattern features actual pictures for each step. It includes a pattern piece for the bottom and flap and then dimensions to cut for the other pieces.
(There is a MEN'S size large hoodie shoved in there above!)
